Why We Buy and Hold Single-Family Home Real Estate – And You Should Too, by Harold Willig

Why do most investors own real estate as an investment? Preqin, a provider of data and analysis for the alternative investments industry, recently published a report (2016 1Q Preqin Quarterly Real Estate Update) that outlined the main reasons why:

* Diversification – 65%

* Inflation Hedge – 61%

* Steady Income - 54%

* Low Correlation to Other Asset Classes – 45%

* Reduce Portfolio Volatility – 32%

* High Risk-Adjusted Returns - 32%

* High Absolute Returns – 16%

While the potential to create and provide steady income were the number one and number two reasons for investing in real estate, according to the infographic below from Piktochart, pride of ownership and long-term ownership were also important factors.

Some of the cons for real estate ownership include:

* Fluctuating Markets

* Outsourcing Issues

* Finding Good Tenants

* Legal Issues with Tenants

* Longer Time for Appreciation
