Why Almost Half of All Americans Prefer to Rent Single-Family Homes [Infographic] by Harold Willig

If you are an investor in single-family homes, you might be glad to know that more than half of all Americans prefer to be renters. So said a recent study by Appfolio, a property management firm.

Rent seems to be the new buy. The National Association of Realtors suggested that within the next ten years, five to six million new rental households would be formed.

Some key findings from the study:

  • 60% of single-family home renters expected to remain renters five years from now.

  • 43% of single-family renters simply did not want to own a home

  • 42% enjoyed renting

  • 31% believed they could not get a mortgage

In sum, many renters are happy being renters. The infographic below details the current proclivities of single-family home renters and apartment renters.

With more people looking to rent rather than buy a home, the conditions for investors looking to own homes in our markets, like Chicago - with strong economic fundamentals, stable and safe neighborhoods, and good schools - should look enticing.
