Where We Live: A Snapshot of the Home vs. Renter Landscape

Where do we live?

According to Green Street Advisors, a real estate analytics firm, the 325 million of us in the US as of December 31, 2015 lived in 118 million “occupied dwellings.” While home ownership is in general decline, we are still mostly owners: 65% owners, 35% of renters.

The single-family rental home market comprised:

  • 15.7 million houses

  • 37% of all rental housing

  • 13.3% of all housing stock

Of those who rent:

  • 42% lived in apartments

  • 37% lived in single-family homes

  • 21% lived in other dwellings, like town-homes, manufactured housing
