South Side of Chicago Led Housing Market in 2018

According to Crain’s, in 2018, the most active real estate markets in Chicago were on the South Side. Key indicators of the real estate market's health on the South Side were all good: more homes sold at a higher median prices and a shorter average time on the market than the year prior.

There were several factors driving this dynamism in the housing market, one of which was affordability. Relative to the North Side, lower-cost deals could easily be found.

Another reason behind the growth spurt is the availability of financial assistance from sources such as the city's Micro-Market Recovery Program, the Marquette Bank Affordable Housing Foundation and the Illinois Housing Development Authority.

Also fueling the sales growth was the overall increase in employment. New jobs mean stronger home sales.
